AGENDA TITLE: Authorize Repair of the Submersible Pump and Motor for Well No. 9,
358 Shady Acres Drive
MEETING DATE: April 20,2005
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That City Council authorize repair of the submersible pump and
motor for Well No. 9, 358 Shady Acres Drive.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The submersible pump and motor at City Well No. 9 failed on
November 23,2004, and the well has since been out of service.
Layne Christensen Company, of Woodland, removed the pump and
motor and has not been successful in determining the cause of the
failure. Submersible motors are sealed, and very few firms are able to open and repair them. Therefore,
Layne Christensen must send the motor out for repair. Staff, with the aid of Layne Christensen, has
researched the best options for bringing Well No. 9 back on line for the upcoming summer peaks. Staff
recommendsthat for Well No. 9, we repair/refurbish a different, equal -sized pump and motor originally
removed from Well No. 13. This pump and motor will likely need fewer repairs. Sending the motor back to
the factory, Byron Jackson, of New Jersey, would cost an estimated $12,000 to $25,000, depending on
what is needed, plus shipping and tax. The turn -around time for the repair is an estimated 4 to 6 months,
thus missing the summer peak water use. Sun -Star, located in Texas, is also capable of the needed motor
repairs, and Layne Christensen staff indicates they have done good work in the past. The estimated cost
of repairs at Sun -Star is between $5,000 and $14,000, again, depending on what repairs are needed, plus
tax and shipping, Their turn -around time is an estimated 6 weeks. Staff recommendswe send the
submersible motor to Sun -Star. Additional cost for installation (includes pump repairs and new column and
cable) is estimated at $16,000.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funds for this repair will be coming from the Water Utility Fund's Water
Production Account budgeted at $50,000 for 2004-05. There is currently a
$33.000 balance in the account.
FUNDING AVAILABLE: The $30,000 is budgeted in the Water Production Operating Account
(180453,7331).
