AGENDA TITLE: Adopt Resolution Appropriating Funds to the San Joaquin County Registrar of
Voters for Costs Associated with Verification of Each Signature on the Fire and
Facilities Sales Tax Initiative Petition (up to $5,550)
MEETING DATE: March 16,2005
PREPARED B Y City Clerk
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt a resolution appropriating funds up to
$5,550 to the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters for costs
associated with verification of each signature on the Fire and
Facilities Sales Tax Initiative petition.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On March 8, 2005, proponents of the Fire and Facilities Sales Tax
initiative tiled their petition containing approximately 4,256
signatures. As the minimum number of signatures required is 10%
of the voters of the city (2,706). the petition was officially accepted
as filed and immediately submitted to the San Joaquin County
Registrar of Voters. Due to the fact that the prima facie count is
very close to the minimum 15% of the voters of the city (4,058) to
qualify for a special election, the Registrar will examine and verify
each sianature filed.
The preliminary estimate for the full signature verification is approximately $5,375; therefore, it is
requested that Council appropriate funds up to $5,550 to cover this expense.
FISCAL IMPACT: This cost was not calculated into the 2004-05 budget; however, there are
funds available in the Election Account — no contingencies necessary.
FUNDING AVAILABLE: $5,550 — Election Acco nt (100102-7323)
