HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - March 16, 2005 E-10AGENDA ITEM Ew 10 CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMiJNICATION AGENDA TITLE Adopt resolution approving the application to apply for recertification grant funds to operate the Lodi LOOK after school programs at Heritage, Lawrence and Needham elementary schools fora three-year period (July 12005 -June 30,2008)undertheAfter School Education and Safety (ASES) Program through the California Department of Education MEETING DATE: March 16,2005 PREPARED B Y Parks and Recreation Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing staff to apply for grant funding to operate after school programs at Heritage, Lawrence, and Needham elementary schools, BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Parks and Recreation Department has operated after school programs at Heritage, Lawrence, and Needham elementary schools under grant funding since December 1998. The currentfunding cycle period expires June 30,2005. In order to secure additional funding for an additional three year period (July 2005 -June 2008) . the City must submit a grant application requesting the re-certificationof the program. The application deadline is April 1, 2005. This grant will providea three-hour after school program fora combined 135 children at the three sites. Children receive instructional time as well as homework assistance, recreational opportunities and a daily nutritional snack. This grant requires a 50% match of in-kind services through collaborative efforts of the community. In-kind contributions are obtained through memorandums of understanding with the Lodi Parks and Recreation Department, Lodi Police Department, Lodi Library, Public Works, Lodi Unified School District, General Mills, Lodi Kiwanis Club, WorkN ET, Community Partnerships of San Joaquin and Department of Agriculture Child Care Food Program. FISCAL IMPACT: The City will be reimbursed $5.00 per child per day of attendance up to $121,500peryear ($364,500hree-yeartotal) from the California Department of Education. This program is 100% funded through grant monies. FUNDING AVAILABLE: Funding for the program was submitted in the departments 2005106 budget g l, which has yet to be appproved. 22 .
