AGENDA TITLE: Presentation regarding Lodi's 2n4 Annual Electronic Waste Clean -Up Day

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On Saturday, February 5, 2005, the City of Lodi Electric Utility will
sponsor the second annual Lodi Electronic Waste Clean -Up Day
event. The event will be held in the public parking lot adjacent to
the tennis courts on Ham Lane. The Lodi Electronic Waste Clean -Up Dayis funded via the City of Lodi
Public Benefits Program.
Between the hours of 7:00am and 10:00am, Lodi residentswill havethe opportunityto dispose of used
computers and television sets. The City of Lodi Electric Utilitywill then have these products hauled away
and properly recycled (this process involves the dismantling of the computers and/or television sets; then,
the various materials used to manufacturethe computers and/or television sets are recycled).
The intent of this project is to encourage the appropriate disposal and recycling of electronic waste.* In
addition, the utility is encouraging Lodi residents to purchase new, energy efficient television sets and/or
computers, which are readily available on the market today (new, energy efficient electronic products
consume less than half of the electricity utilized by similar products that are five years of age or older).
In August of 2004, during the City's first annual ElectronicWaste Clean -Up Day event, over 12.5 tons of
used computers and television sets were disposed of and recycled (427 vehicles passed through the
event).
*As ofJanuary 1, 2005, new California law requires businesses in the state to properly dispose of and recycle used computer
equipment.
