RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council proclaim the Month of May, 2003, to be known as Peace
Offices Memorial Month throughout the City of Lodi,
BACKGROUND INFORMATIOW The Lodi Police Department requests that the Council make this
proclannation in keeping with such tributes at the state and national level.
This year, the week of May 11 through May 17 is designated National Police
Week, while May 9 is the date of the California Peace Officer Memorial
Ceremony. These ceremonies are held annually to honor the memory of over 15,000 law enforcement officers who
have lost their lives in the line cif duty throughout the United States. Of the 147 line of duty deaths in 2002,
California's loss was nine officers.
Members of the Lodi Police Department, led by it's Honor Guard, are attending ceremonies in three venues: The Lodi
Police Peace Officer Memorial Service at Temple Baptist Church on May 4, the San Joaquin County Memorial at
Stockton Police Headquarters on May 7, and the California Memorial Ceremony in Sacramento on May 9. Also on
May 7, a ceremony will be held at the graveside of Officer Rick Cromwell, the only Lodi Police Officer ever lost M the
line of duty.
An inscription at the California State Memorial reads'. "Go, stranger, and tell the (people) that we lie here in obedience
to their laws." We urge the City Council to join in this message, honoring our fallen Peace Officers.
