COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of National Volunteer's Week Proclamation
RECOMMENDED ACTION-, That Mayor Hitchcock present a proclamation proclaiming the period .of .
April 27 — May 3, 2003 as National Volunteer's Week in the City of Lodi.
BACKGROUND INFORMATIONThe mayor has been requested to present a proclamation proclaiming
the period of April 27 —Inlay 3, 2003 as National Volunteer's: Week in
the City of Lodi. Chief Jerry Adams will attend this meeting to accept
the proclamation, along with Police Volunteer Supervisor, Jeanie
iskup representing the Lodi Police Partners.
The Lodi Police Partners Program has been in operation for nine years, providing endless hours of service
to the Lodi Police Department. In 2002 Partners donated 28,031 hours to the Police Departrnent'with an
estimated fiscal benefit of approximately $431,000. (Please refer to the attached report.)
The Lodi Police Chaplaincy Program was initiated in February of 1094. This dedicated group of ioc l
clergy is an essential part of the Lodi Police Department. They respond to the public and police personnel,
providing counseling and support in tunes of crisis and tragedy.
The Lodi Police Reserve Program, formerly referred to as Auxiliary Police Officers, has existed since early
in the history of the Department. Many of today's full-time officers started out as Reserves, and atony have
also gene on to work for a variety of State and Federal agencies. There are currently five Reserve Officers
volunteering their services with the Lodi Police Department.
The Lodi Police Explorer Post is a division of the Boy Scouts of America. At the present time thirteen local
youths are active in the Explorer Post. litany of our Explorer Scouts 90 on to become Reserve Officers,
and like the Deserves, they often become full-time Police Officers for Lodi and other cities. Our Chief of
Police started out some thirty years agog as a Lodi Police Explorer Scout. We also have a Lodi High R.O.P.
Police Academy Program for young people interested in a law enforcement career.
