HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - April 16, 2003 D-01aITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) Regional Excellence Award for 2002 to the City of Lodi's "Storm Drain Detective" Program MEETING DATE -1 April 16, 2003 PREPARED BY: Public Works Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: At this meeting, Mayor Susan Hitchcock will present the San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJC0G) Regional Excellence Honorable Mention Award for 2002 to staff and student representatives of the City of Lodi's "Storm Drain Detective" Program, BACKGROUND INFORMATION- At the SJCOG 2002 Regional Excellence Awards presentation held on March 7, 2003 in Lodi, the City of Lodi's "Storm Drain Detective" Program was awarded a Regional Excellence Award Honorable Mention, This citizen monitoring group is an educational program that has teachers, students, and other volunteers monitoring the water quality in the Mokelumne River and Lodi Lake to assess the impact of storm drain runoff. The ongoing program was started in 2000. Results of monitoring are available to the public under Storm Drain Detectives at www.lodi.gov. Past program awards and recognition include an Environmental Excellence Award from TOPPS (Targeted Opportunities to Prevent Pollution in San Joaquin County) and the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors for the category of Water, Public Sector for 2001. The program was also awarded a $70,000 grant from Department of Water Resources/CalFed to further the program's monitoring and educationai activities. SJGOG brings together mayors, city council members and county supervisors to work an regional issues for San Joaquin County. While regional transportation planning is its primary role, SJCOG also takes a look at population statistics, airport land use, habitat and open space planning, and other regional issues.
