COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE: Approve Standardization of Standby Electric Generator Systems for the
Water/Wastewater Utility to Olympian as Supplied by Caterpillar
MEETING DATE; February 19, 2003
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council approve standardization of standby electric
generator systems for the water/wastewater utility, water well, and
sanitary sewer lift stations to Olympian as supplied by Caterpillar.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Currently the City of Lodi has 18 standby emergency generators
throughout the system, nine (9) of which are Caterpillar
manufactured (Olympian). Standardization to Olympian as supplied
by Caterpillar of future generator purchases would simplify
,maintenance, reduce parts inventory costs, reduce the necessity for special tools (hand tools, computer
software), improve operations, and reduce the cost of maintenance training. It would also benefit our
electricians and water/wastewater plant mechanics, The Fleet Committee is in agreement with
standardization of future purchases of the Olympian standby electric generator systems. This includes
drop -over enclosures for sanitary sewer lift stations and other enclosures for well site generators to reduce
noise,
Lodi Municipal Code, Section 3.20.070, Bidding, ".,.when the City Council determines that the purchase or
method of purchase would be in the best interests of the city", authorizes Council to take this action. This
will be a sole source manufacturer. We should still be able to receive competitive quotes from various
suppliers/installers.
For the Council's information, the City of Lodi has previously standardized the following equipment:
Water Meters
Fire Hydrants
Propeller Pumps & Motors
Low Voltage Electrical Panels
Submersible Pumps
FUN DINGC Water/Wastewater Utility Fund — none needed at this time
