RECOMMENDED ACTION., Presentation.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On December 4, 2002 at 03:16 hours, Engine 2034 (Station 4) was
dispatched to an unknown fire at 820 N. Lower Sacramento Rd. While en -
route, Engine 2034 received additional information confirmin a structure fire
in an apartment with persons trapped inside, Upon arrival, Engine.2034's
initial report was of flames coming from the front of the structure and lapping over the roof through the front door and
window, Engine 2034 went into service with an 1 3/4 inch hand line and attempted to effect rescue. With the arrival of
Battalion 2011 (incident commander) a second alarm was called. A second alarm initiates the response of additional
fire equipment from Woodbridge and Mokelumne, as well as off duty Lodi Fire Department personnel. Firefighting
crows were advised the victim may be located in the front bedroom. Truck 2051, with its four person crew, split into
two teams; one to perform ventilation and the other to search and rescue duties. The rescue team entered the
apartment under heavy smoke conditions with the Bullard Thermal Imaging Camera. The victim was located in the
dining room area and removed within one minute of being found. It was estimated that without the Thermal Imaging
Camera, it would have taken several more minutes to locate the victim. When found, the victim was not breathing and
first aid was immediately begun. Once the victim began breathing, the patient was turned over to AMR for further
treatment and transport to the hospital. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin. However, several
apartments were evacuated due to dense smoke and proximity to the fire,
On November 24, 2002, engine 2032 and was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1649 Victor Road. Upon
arrival, crews found a single family dwelling well involved with flames coming through the roof and rear of the
structure, Engine 2032 made entry and found flames rolling across the ceiling. The living room, kitchen, dining room
and bedroom were all burning at this time. In a coordinated attack, the firefighters from Engines 2032, 2033, 2034
and 2051 attacked the fire, ventilated the building, searched for victims, and established a rapid intervention team.
During the primary search, two deceased pets were found. However, all human occupants escaped unharmed.
In both fires, all fireground duties were performed quickly and professionally due in part to training, discipline, and hard
work. The men and women of the Lodi Fire Department, especially "B Shift," are to be commended for their efforts.
