HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - January 15, 2003 D-02b101-4 kATY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of Crime Stoppers Month Proclamation DATE- January 15, 2003 RECOMMENDED ACTION: That Mayor Hitchcock presents a proclamation proclaiming the Month of January as Crime Stoppers Month in the City of Lodi. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Mayor has been requested to present a proclamation proclaiming the Month of January as Crime Stoppers Month in the City of Lodi. Chief Jerry Adams will be at the meeting to accept the proclamation, along with Teresa Miller, Lodi Area Crime Stoppers President, and various Board Members in the audience. Crime Stoppers is an International Program that started in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1980, to help make our communities and schools safer. It is a confidential program, which pays rewards for information leading to an arrest, recovery of stolen property, or recovery of illegal narcotics. All callers are anonymous and all information is confidential. Funding is obtained through private donations and managed by a Board of Directors. Our local program, Lodi Area Crime Stoppers, began in 1984 and is a private corporation with 15 Board members at large. They work to raise private funds for reward payments and also act as the governing body and reward approval group. Lodi Area Crime Stoppers encompasses everything North of Eight Mile Road in San Joaquin County, including the City of Lodi and the unincorporated geographical area. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office liaison is Detective Randy Bender, Chief Jerry Adams has been the Law Enforcement Coordinator of the program since 1990. Chief Adams has served as President of California State Crime Stoppers, along with Marilyn Cook, who not only served as a Past State President, but also on the Board of Crime Stoppers International. Lodi Area Crime Stoppers has received many awards and is recognized internationally as a model program. The current President of Lodi Area Crime Stoppers is Teresa Miller. She also serves as Vice President on the California State Crime Stoppers Board of Directors, Since its inception 19 years ago, Lodi Area Crime Stoppers has cleared 462 cases and has paid rewards totaling more than $35,000. As a direct result, more than $1 Million in property has been recovered and $152,000 in narcotics has been confiscated.
