MEETING DATE: December 17, 2003
PREPARED BY: Electric Utility Director
RECOMMEMED ACTION: That the Mayor present a certificate of recognition to the
Coordinator of the Lodi Youth Helping Hands Project.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On November 14 and 15, 2003, forty-seven (47) youth volunteers
from Lodi participated in the Lodi's Youth Helping Hands Project,
Phase I. This event was sponsored by the City of Lodi Electric
Utility and funded through the Lodi Public Benefits Program.
The youth received several hours of hands-on training, learning the basics of home energy conservation.
They teamed how to install door weather-stripping, low -flow showerheads, faucet aerators,
programmable thermostats, and compact fluorescent lamps. In addition, the youth were provided an
overview of customer interaction and interpersonal communication skill -building.
Once they had parWpated in the hands-on training, the youth were then partnered with a feUow student
volunteer and one adult supervisor. These "teams" then visited the homes of low-income customers in
Lodi. The youth volunteers applied their new skills, installing weather-stripping, low flow showerheads
and the other energy conservation products in these homes. The energy conservation products will
reduce energy consumption from fire to twenty percent, depending upon the total number of measures
implemented.
Note., a total of 144 Lodi homos/apartments were retrofitted with some or all of the aforementioned
energy conservation products on November 14 and 15, 2003
