BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In cooperation with the City of Stockton and San Joaquin County's:: Stormwater Education Coordinators, several students from Elkhorn..School's Iii' and 8'€' grade classes have requested that the City of Lodi host a .n official California Coastal Cleanup on the Mokelumne River on Saturday, September 20, 2003. Elkhorn's students have to satisfy a 7 -hour per quarter community service project. This event will satisfy this requirement. San Joaquin County and Lodi Public Works will provide some bags and gloves. Cleanups will be held throughout California along bays, creeks, lakes, rivers, highways and the coast. California's shorelines collect millions of pounds of debris throughout the year — debris that can endanger marine animals and humans alike. The source: of this problem is often garbage from upstream communities along the river. Volunteers will remove trash from the lake and river, keep a record of all debris found, then submit their findings to the Ocean Conservancy's international database, which is then used to identify the sources of debris and help devise solutions to the marine debris problem}. Proposed for the day is an 8:30 a.m. start time at the Dodi Lake Discovery Center. Work groups will be assigned to various "hot spots" along the lake and river. Cleanup and recordkee:ping will extend until noun. Local sponsors include California Waste Recovery Systems which is providing trash removal services, Starbucks Coffees (providing coffee, of course!), and Pat Fehling (a Lodi Lake docent and local business owner). The Warks and Recreation Department and Lodi Labe Docents will also cooperate with boat support and leadership alone the river. Visit vA v ,pfor orq for more information on the Coastal Cleanup statewide. Members of the public, who wish to participate should wear their work clothes and arrive at the Lodi Lake Pork Discovery Center on Saturday, September 20, 2003, 8:30 a.m. to noon.
