The Community Partnership for Families is planning the second annual "Pakistan Independence Day" for Sunday, August 17, 2003, noon to 5 p.m. at Lodi Lake, Last year, this family event was sponsored by the Community Partnership for Families, Boys & Girls Club, South Asian Cultural Club, Blue Cross of California, City of Lodi, and several other local agencies. The celebration is open to the general public. Its purpose is to celebrate diversity in our community and share the culture and values of the Pakistani community with the general population. In 2002, the first Pakistan Independence Day began as a small neighborhood gathering to encourage youth leadership and to build bridges between Muslim and other communities living in Lodi, Many agencies, businesses, and private parties joined together in order to accomplish this. mission. Some of the collaborative partners included Lodi Boys and Girls Club, Lodi Police Department, Lodi Fire Department, Lodi Public Library, Parks & Recreation Department, non-profit agencies such as Project Breakthrough, Blue Cross of California, Health Plan of San Joaquin, and local businesses such as, F& M Bank, Bank of Lodi, Glass Awareness Committee (GEC) Owen - Illinois, and Tariq Din, Realtor. Over thirty agencies came together to offer fun, food, music, cultural education, and social services. Ethnic foods and entertainment reflecting diversity were provided free of charge. The event received significant media attention. Based on the success of last year's event, the Partnership would like to establish a Mexican Independence Day celebration as well, September 16'h is the official Independence Day and is the tentative date set for the Lodi celebration.
