RECOMMENDED ACTION- That the Mayor present a Community Improvement Award to Mark and
Mary Gisler, the owners of the property at 404 E. Pine Street, for their
accomplishments in the renovation of that property.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The subject property, 404 E. Pine Street, has played a significant
role in Lodi's history. Originally built in the late 1920's, as the
Buchanan Sanitarium, this facility later transitioned into the
Buchanon Hospital before being sold and changed to the
Community Hospital in Lodi in the 1950's. This facility was operated as Lodi's first hospital.
The facility then transitioned into use as a board and care facility in the late 1960's. That use has
continued since then. However, it has not always been a complement to the surrounding community. In
1996, when the Community Improvement Division was first established, one of the first issues th at was
presented regarding Eastside problems, were the conditions of the property and the activities of the
residents at the board and care facility that was in operation at that time. As these complaints were
being investigated, Mark Gisler purchased the facility and began a number of changes which have
culminated in the attractive facility that we honor today.
After providing the needed management of the facility which put an end to the nuisance activities that.
the residents of the facility were engaged in, Mr. Gisler and his family started what has been a seven
year project, starting with the roof, the internal systems for the facility, and finally the exterior
improvements which have capped off the project.
In recognition for their dedication to completing this project and the fruits of their efforts which now stand
as a marked improvement to that neighborhood, the Eastside Improvement Committee has
recommended that the Community Improvement Award be issued to Mr. Gisler and his family.
