CITY OF LODI
COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
TM
AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of Peace Officer Memorial Month Proclamation
MEETING DATE: May 5, 2004
PREPARED BY: JERRY J. ADAMS, CHIEF OF POLICE
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council proclaims the Month of May, 2004, to be known as
Peace Officer Memorial Month throughout the City of Lodi.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Lodi Police Department requests that the Council make this
proclamation in keeping with such tributes at the state and national level.
This year, the week of May 9 through May 15 is designated National Police
Week, while May 7 is the date of the California Peace Officer Memorial
Ceremony. These ceremonies are held annually to honor the memory of over 15,000 law enforcement officers who
have lost their lives in the line of duty throughout the united States. Of the 145 line of duty deaths in 2003,
California's loss was 17 officers.
Members of the Lodi Police Department, led by it's Honor Guard, are attending ceremonies in three venues: The
Lodi Police Peace Officer Memorial Service at Temple Baptist Church on May 2, the San Joaquin County Memorial
at Stockton Police Headquarters on May 5, and the California Memorial Ceremony in Sacramento on May 7. Also
on May 5, a ceremony will be held at the graveside of Officer Rick Cromwell, the only Lodi Police Officer ever lost in
the line of duty.
An inscription at the California State Memorial reads: "Go, stranger, and tell the (people) that we lie here in
obedience to their laws." We urge the City Council to join in this message, honoring our fallen Peace Officers.
