SISTER CITY COMMITTEE
Queen Elizabeth I1 of Br.tain addressed President Bush yesterday:
"Friendships need to be kept in good repair --not just the
personal friendships between heads of state but the more
diffuse friendships between the governments and peoples of
two nations. At your kind invitation, Mr. President, we
are here to celebrate and to reaffirm that friendship."
It is in that spirit that I am here to represent Lodi Sister City
Committee and to convey Greetings and gifts from Mayor Chuzo Hara of
Kofu, Japan. Last September, the City Council, Lodi Grape Festival
and all of Lodi welcomed him and Mayor Antonio Montani of Lodi, Italy,
for the Mayors' Visit, the first time that representatives of the two
cities visited here together. This has resulted in a friendship
between those two cities, also.
It was through the inspiration of Mayor Randy Snider, who wished to
thank our Sister Cities for the hospitality and generosity shown to
Lodians, that the Visit was conceived and brought to life.
The books were prepared and presented in recognition of Kofu's four
Sister City relationships: 1958 Des Moines, Iowa; 1961 Lodi,
California; 1975 Pau, France; 1984 Chengdu, China. One contains
photographs of mayors and visitors to Kofu from each of those Cities.
History and commentary on Lodi alone covers 17 pages. Two show the
flora and fauna of Kofu, and the other is a pictorial history of Kofu.
COUNCILMEMBER RANDY SNIDER
