MEETING DATE: December 18, 2002 PREPARED BY: Community Center Coordinator RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: FUNDING: The Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission, in conjunction with the Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club, Valley -Lodi MRI and Central Valley Waste Services is sponsoring a program entitled Honoring Teens. The Lodi Youth Commission Leadership Committee selects one teen to be awarded Teen of the Month from the applications submitted to the commission from the general public, various schools, and church groups. This month's Teen of the Month is Morgan Vogel is from Lodi Academy High School. None Required. c - Cl.. Yvette Maragliano Community Center Coordinator APPROVED: H. Don Flynn -- City Manager, Bio for City Council December Teen of the Month Morgan Vogel is a senior at Lodi Academy High School. Morgan is a sensitive, honest and gracious young woman of many talents. She volunteered time last year and this year to sing and act the lead role in the Christmas pageant at her church. She helped build a church with a youth group in the Dominican Republic during summer break. She is a top scholar always willing to assist others; she is cheerful, polite, friendly and responsible to the students and faculty at her school. She holds many class offices, plays on varsity teams and performs with the band. She also assists at her church on a weekly basis. Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission Announcements The 8' Annual Youth Conference has selected the theme and a new direction for February 28 of 2003. It will be an Interactive Career Day — "Think Beyond Now" with Michael Pritchard as the opening and closing keynote speaker, with fourteen workshops by volunteer presenters. The posters and brochures will be available at high schools starting January 10'. Registration deadline is February 12`h. The commission is organizing a new event for Friday, April 18' of 2003 entitled..."Speak For Youth". This event will be for high school students and will take place between 9:30 am — 11:30 am. The motivational speaker is Mr. Herman Cain who is the Chairman of Godfather's Pizza, Inc., after serving as CEO and President of the company for 10 years. He is also the founder and CEO of T.H.E. Inc., a leadership consulting company. He was named one of Ebony Magazines 100 Most Influential Black Americans in 1997 and 1999. He serves on the Board of Directors of several major corporations such as Whirlpool, Readers Digest, Hallmark Cards and the Morehouse School of Medicine. His former employment includes the Department of the Navy, Coco -Cola, Pillsbury Company Vice President and Burger King Corporation Vice President. The commission is currently seeking financial sponsors for this event.
