AGENDA TITLE: Presentation by the Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission
Regarding Honoring Teens program

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Presentation.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission, in conjunction with the
Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club, Valley -Lodi MRI and Central Valley Waste Services is
sponsoring a program entitled Honoring Teens. The Lodi Youth Commission
Leadership Committee selects one teen to be awarded Teen of the Month from the
applications submitted to the commission from the general public, various schools, and
church groups. This month's Teen of the Month is Heather Worden is from St. Mary's
High School.

November Teen of the Month
Heather Worden has a GPA of 4.1. She is a member of National Honor Society,
California Scholarship Federation, Interact, Special Olympics and Girls Cabinet. She
volunteers at St. Mary's Dining Hall, St. Theresa Cancer Foundation and is a member of
St. Mary's Campus Ministry team. She also is a part of the diving team and rides and
shows horses.
Greater Lodi Area Youth Commission Announcements
• The Education Teen Lead Session will be held on October 28 from 12:30 — 3:30
pm at the LUSD offices.
The Environment Teen Lead Session was held on November 19 from 2:00 — 5:30
pm. The students in the program toured three locations. A well system with
Frank Beeler at the corner of Beckman Park, Micke Grove Zoo and the
Endangered Species with Joanne Larsen and completed the evening at Central
Valley Waste Recovery with a dinner and tour with Christine Wied. Adult
Advisor Berbawy and Commissioner Courtney Cook coordinated this session.
• The Youth Conference has selected the theme for February 28 of 2003. It will be
"Interactive Career Day — Think Beyond Now" with Michael Pritchard as the
opening and closing keynote speaker and with fourteen workshops already
confirmed by volunteer presenters. The posters and brochures are completed and
are ready to deliver to the high schools in the beginning of January.
• The commission is organizing a new event for either the spring of 2003 or the fall
of 2003 entitled... "Speak For Youth". This event will be for high school
students and will take place between 9:30 am — 12:30 pm during a pre -arranged
school day with the district office.
• The commission will assist the Hutchins Street Square Site Foundation in their
annual Holiday Gala on Saturday, December 7.
• The commission Chair, Vice Chair, City Liaison, Advisor Dean and Advisor
Berbawy had a wonderful meeting with the Mr.Huyett, the superintendent of
LUSD, to discuss the commissions and school districts continued support of each
other in our programs, events and activities. The school district is extremely
supportive and enthusiastic to the commission.
