HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - May 5, 1993 (67)� or CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Support for Routing of Amtrak Traine Through the City of Lodi Utilizing Southern Pacific Tracks MEETING DATE: May 5, 1993 PREPARED BY: City Manager RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt Resolution No. 93-58 expressing support .for the routing of Amtrak trains through the San Joaquin Valley an,' the City of Lodi utilizing Southern Pacific tracks. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: As the City Council is aware, there has been for some time discussions concerning the ultimate routing of Amtrak trains through the San Joaquin Valley. Obviously, the Citf Council has been extremely interested in how this routing would affect the City of Lodi. Amtrak would best serve our City by a route through the downtown area, stopping at the proposed rehabilitated depot. The attached resolution (Exhibit A) expresses support for such a routing. (pending transfer) Financial and Institutional Ana:ysls 7-13 C14AP7,'M4 RESOLUTION NO. 93-59 A RESOLUTION OF THE LODI CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE ROUTING OF AMTRAK TRAINS THROUGH TKR C' 7&1 0- LODI UTILIZING SOUTHERN PACIFIC TRACKS WHEREAS. rail service is an envirorim-ntally clean and effective alternative for the mass movement of people throughout the State; and WHEREAS, the majority of people in the San Joaquin Corridor live near the alignment of the existing Southern Pacific Railroad tracks; and WHEREAS, rail service should be located where the service can best serve on population of the affected area; and WHEREAS, millions of dollars have already been spent by public agencies to accommodate new or revitalized rail stations along the Southern Pacific rail line; and WHEREAS, the use of Southern Pacific Railroad tracks for AMTRAK is consistent with the provisions of Proposition 116; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Lodi City Council that the California Transportation Commission and the California Department of Transportation be requested to reconsider their decision regarding AMTRAK service in the San Joaquin Valley by realigning service along the Southern Pacific Railroad Tracks, including the segment between the cities of Stockton and Sacramento.
