AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of Certificate of Recognition to General Mills, Inc.
MEETING DATE: August 21, 2002

RECOMMENDED ACTION: General Mills Inc., while recognized as one of Lodi's major
employers, has also been a community leader in making charitable
donations and grant awards to various organizations and events in
greater San Joaquin County.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Through its Lodi Community Partnership Council, formed in 1983,
General Mills, Inc. awarded a total of $251,000 in community grants
during fiscal year 2001/2002. Lodi organizations were the
Direct Beneficiaries of over $70,000 of the philanthropic support provided by General Mills.
Additionally, The General Mills Foundation matched Lodi employee United Way contributions
$102,561 and the Lodi plant donated considerable amounts of food product to numerous non-profit
organizations and area food banks.
The Foundation's grants generally focus on four areas: Family Life, Childhood Nutrition, Education and
Arts & Culture. It's strategic objectives are to (1) Demonstrably improve the quality of life in Communities
with General Mills facilities and employees, (2) Initiate innovative solutions and approaches to improve
childhood nutrition and (3) Support General Mills employees and retirees giving to United Way,
education and arts & culture organizations through a gift -matching program. The City of Lodi would like to
recognize General Mills for its generous donations to the community and its contributions to all of San
Joaquin County.

BACKGROUND:
The General Mills Lodi Community Partnership Council was formed in 1983 to evaluate all facility requests
for charitable donations and award grants to organizations and events that would most benefit the people of
San Joaquin County. This council currently consists of seven General Mills -Lodi Plant employees: Harry
Brown (Cereal Plant 1); Ray Davis (Warehouse); Alex Taddei (Facility Maintenance); Rich Mullenbach
(Financial Operations Manager); Melinda Sparks (Plant Mgmt. Admin. Assist.); Ruth Ann Mize (Human
Resources); and Bob Wheeler (Plant Manager).
FUNDING AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
Grants are awarded from two sources: The General Mills Foundation in Minneapolis and locally from the
Lodi Plant contributions budget. As a general rule, all grants of $1,000 or more are awarded through the
Foundation, with less sizable amounts drawn from the Lodi Plant budget. In fiscal year 2001/2002, we
were able to award $251,000 in community grants.
The Foundation's strategic objectives are to:
• Demonstrably improve the quality of life in communities with General Mills facilities and employees.
• initiate innovative solutions and approaches to improve childhood nutrition.
• Support General Mills employees and retirees giving to United Way, education and arts & culture
organizations through a gift -matching program.
When evaluating requests, the Community Partnership Council and GMI Foundation will favor
organizations meeting the following criteria:
• Mission is closely related to the Foundation's priorities.
• Programs or activities are based in communities with General Mills operations and employees.
• Programs or activities involve General Mills employees and retirees.
• Services create sustainable community improvement.
The Foundation's grants will focus mainly on four areas:
• Family Life 0 Education
• Childhood Nutrition 0 Arts & Culture
The Community Partnership Council and General Mills Foundation win not award grants to:
• Individuals.
• Organizations without 501 (c) (3) and 509 (a) status.
• Travel by groups.
• Organizations that do not comply with the Foundation's Non -Discrimination Policy.
• Social, labor, veterans, alumni or fraternal organizations serving a limited constituency.
• Religious organizations for religious purposes.
• Political causes, candidates or legislative lobbying efforts.
• Recreational, sporting events or athletic associations.
• Organizations seeking underwriting for advertising.
• Basic research.
• Conferences, seminars and Workshops.
• Campaigns to eliminate or control specific diseases.
• Publications, films or television programs.
• Underwriting for program sponsorship.
