AGENDA TITLE: Update on the activities of the Parks and Recreation Commission

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Bob Johnson, Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission,
will be at the meeting to update the City Council on the many
activities of the Parks and Recreation Commission.

PARTIAL LISTING OF PARKS AND RECREATION
ACCOMPLISHMENTS (2001-02)
• Design work currently under way for:
• DeBenedetti Park
• Indoor Sports Center
• Aquatics Complex
• Renovations are currently under way to the National Guard Armory which will
result in an indoor gymnasium available for use year round under a lease
agreement.
• Obtained $525,000 Prop 12 Grant.
• Obtained $168,000 Prop 12 Grant.
• Accepted $50,000 donation for Blakely Field Improvements.
• Obtained $48,000 grant to offer after school program at Washington
Elementary School. Also continue to maintain fee based and grant fimded ASP
programs for over 350 children at Vinewood, Reese, Nichols, Lawrence,
Beckman, Heritage, Lockeford elementary schools
• Over 186,000 people participated in programs, attended special events, and
utilized facilities in 2001.
• Skatepark construction currently under way.
• Added a sixth swim league team to the aquatics program and participation has
increased from roughly 700 to roughly 740.
• Improvements to Hale Park and Armory Bleachers under way.
• Katzakian Park construction is now complete and includes a vineyard project
component ($580,700).
• Lodi Lake Phase I Bicycle/Pedestrian Corridor Project completed
($821,022.48).
• Improvements to Kofu Park baseball field completed with help of donation by
BOBS.
• In partnership with DPW and Lodi Docents completed renovations to the Lodi
Lake Discovery Center.
• Have cleared Roget Park site of dead trees and brush for future development.
• Replaced playground equipment at Salas Park.
• Replaced and improved playground and park equipment at Century Park.
• Partnership with Lodi Sports Foundation resulted in new seating and infield sod
installation at Zupo Field.
• Installed additional irrigation system along central area of Lodi Lake.
• In partnership with BOBS, extended backstops at Kofu Park.
• In partnership with BOBS, installed new scoreboards at Salas Park
• Design and fUnding work currently under way for Lodi Lake Phase II
Bicycle/Pedestrian Project.
• Review of facilities fees and charges rates is currently under way.
