CITY OF LORI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE' Presentation of Peace Officer Memorial Month Proclamation
DATE: May 15, 2002
PREPARED BY: JERRY J. ADAMS, CHIEF OF POLICE
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council proclaim the Month of May, 2002, to be known as Peace
Officer Memorial Month throughout the City of Lodi.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Lodi Police Department requests that the Council make this
proclamation in keeping with such tributes at the state and national level.
This year, the week of May 12 through May 18 is designated National Police
Week, while May 3 is the date of the California Peace Officer Memorial
ceremony. These ceremonies are held annually to honor the memory of over 15,000 law enforcement officers who
have lost their lives in the line of duty throughout the United States. The year 2001 was particularly tragic, due to
seventy officers having died during the World Trade Center attacks. Of the 228 line of duty deaths in 2001,
California's loss was eleven officers.
Members of the Lodi Police Department, led by it's Honor Guard, will attend ceremonies in three venues: the
California Memorial Ceremony in Sacramento on May 3; The Countywide Peace Officer Memorial Service at Temple
Baptist Church on May 5; and the San Joaquin County Memorial at Stockton Police Headquarters, on May 8. Also
on May 8, a ceremony will be held at the graveside of Officer Rick Cromwell, the only Lodi Police Officer ever lost in
the line of duty.
An inscription at the California State Memorial reads: "Go, stranger, and tell the (people) that we lie here in obedience
to their laws." We urge the City Council to join in this message, honoring our fallen Peace Officers.
FUNDING: None.
