AGENDA TITLE: Accept donation of one vehicle to the Police Department fleet, and authorize an
increase in the number of vehicles assigned to the Police Department.
DATE: March 6, 2002
PREPARED BY: JERRY J. ADAMS, CHIEF OF POLICE
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council accept a donation of one vehicle to the Police
Department fleet, and authorize an increase in the number of vehicles
assigned to this department.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Police Department has been offered a donated 2002 Chevrolet
Astro Van which will be fully funded by the Lodi Area Crime Stoppers.
The Crime Prevention Unit is in need of an additional vehicle because
the number of volunteer staff working on this effort continues to grow. The
newly developed "Business Alert Network" will require staff and volunteers to visit local merchants to implement and
maintain the program. The new van will be used by the Crime Prevention Officer daily and will be on display at
special events, parades, etc. The current vehicle will be added to the Partners' fleet to be used by volunteers
assigned to conduct Crime Prevention programs and Neighborhood Watch Meetings. Lodi Area Crime Stoppers
recognizes the need of an additional vehicle and has stepped forward to provide the funding. Per the City's Fleet
Policies and Procedures, both accepting donated vehicles and adding vehicles to the City's fleet require Council
approval.
Lodi Crime Stoppers is a non -profit -private corporation, developed in 1984, and provides cash rewards to anonymous
citizens supplying information that leads to arrests. Since their inception $34,500.00 has been paid in rewards. In
2001 Crime Stoppers tips resulted in six arrests and numerous people turned themselves in when seeing their picture
in the Crime Stopper's "Most Wanted" section of the local newspaper. Lodi Area Crime Stoppers covers Lodi and all
of the unincorporated area in Northern San Joaquin County.
The Police Department acknowledges that, if the donation is accepted, when this vehicle is due for replacement it will
again be the Police Department's responsibility to find funding for that replacement, or seek another donated vehicle.
The General Fleet Committee has reviewed this donation, and agrees with the Police Department in its
recommendation to the Council.
