HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - April 17, 2002 D-02aCITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of National Volunteer's Week Proclamation DATE: April 17, 2002 PREPARED BY: JERRY J. ADAMS, CHIEF OF POLICE RECOMMENDED ACTION: That Mayor Penino present a proclamation proclaiming the period of April 21 - 27, 2002 as National Volunteer's Week in the City of Lodi. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Mayor has been requested to present a proclamation proclaiming the period of April 21 - 27, 2002 as National Volunteer's Week in the City of Lodi. Chief Jerry Adams will be at the meeting to accept the proclamation, along with Police Volunteer Supervisor, Jeanie Biskup. representing the Lodi Police Partners. The Lodi Police Partners Program has been in operation for eight years, providing endless hours of service to the Lodi Police Department (see attached Year End Report 2001), but they are just one group of volunteers providing assistance. The Lodi Police Reserve Program, formerly referred to as Auxiliary Police Officers, has existed since early in the history of the Department. Many of today's full-time officers started out as Reserves, and many have also gone on to work for a variety of State and Federal agencies. There are currently four Reserve Officers volunteering their services with the Lodi Police Department. The Lodi Police Explorer Post is a division of the Boy Scouts of America. At the present time twelve local youths are active in the Explorer Post. Many of our Explorer Scouts go on to become Reserve Officers, and like the Reserves, they often become full-time Police Officers for Lodi and other cities. Our Chief of Police started out some thirty years ago as a Lodi Police Explorer Scout. A new volunteer program targeting adults under the age of 55 who wish to be involved with the police department and provide a variety of assistance will be launched during this year.
