CITY OF LODI
COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE: PURCHASE OF ADDITIONAL RADIO EQUIPMENT FOR THE
NARCOTICS/GANG UNIT AND SWAT TEAM
MEETING•DATE: May 18, 1994
PREPARED BY: Police Chief
RECOMMENDED ACTION: City Council authorizes the expenditure of
$44,286 to purchase 16 Motorola Saber Radios
with batteries, microphones, and chargers.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Local drug trafficers and gang members
increasingly use police scanners to monitor
our narcotic/gang/vice operations. Since
the police department has no radios with
secured channels, the drug and gang members listen to our
transmissions and can avoid arrest by disposal of incriminating
evidence. The "bad guys" have the capability of knowing exactly
what's happening when it's happening.
In addition, the police department has a serious shortage of radios
and when we have several major incidents occurring at the same time,
we have to juggle radio equipment. Nine of these radios will be
installed in the SWAT van which will increase our response time to
major and critical incidents.
Chief Hansen will be available to answer any questions Council
members may have.
FUNDING: Asset Seizure funds totalling $44,286.
