CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
AGENDA TITLE: Authorize Removal of One Tulip Tree from the Civic Center Plaza in Preparation for
the All Veterans Plaza Construction Project
MEETING DATE: August 1, 2001
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council authorize removal of a tulip tree in the Civic Center
Plaza for installation of the Veterans Plaza fountain.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: As part of the design of the fountain for the Veterans Plaza, the
architect planned to remove one tulip tree on the west side of the
walkway, immediately north of the walkway to the rear entrance to
Carnegie Forum. Because the tree is mature and a good specimen,
staff wished to confirm this action with the City Council.
The design includes a 25 -foot diameter fountain with an approximately 8 -foot diameter granite sphere in
the center. The fountain width requires that the existing walkways be widened in the vicinity of the
fountain. This widening extends the walkway into the trunk of the existing tree. In addition, the plan is to
frame the fountain with four new, small trees on each side. City staff and the architect are still working
on the landscape design and will provide additional information at the meeting.
Saving the tree would entail substantially changing the design to reduce the size of the fountain and the
other elements, since they are all interrelated. This would set the schedule back many weeks and would
increase the cost of the project for redesign fees plus reordering many of the granite elements which
would mean additional costs.
