NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR
The Sound of Music is based on the factual account of the escape of the famous singing
Trapp family from Austria during the Nazi regime. The script is based on Maria Augusta
Trapp's The Trapp Family Singers, although Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse
emphasized sentiment and downplayed the harshness of the Nazi invasion of Austria. At
the time the show opened on Broadway (November 16, 1959), the story of the Trapp
family was well known and the material presented infinite possibilities for a
dramatization. Unfortunately for the theatre world, The Sound ofMusic was to be
Rodgers and Hammerstein's last collaboration, for during the run of the show, Oscar
Hammerstein iI died.
The opening on Broadway featured Mary Martin, who had achieved great success in
South Pacific a few years earlier, as Maria and Theodore Bikel, an established
Broadway and film actor, as Captain von Trapp. The role of the Mother Abbess was
played by Patricia Neway, the only cast member to play the same role in the 1965 film
version starring Julie Andrews.
Although most critics agree that The Sound of Music was not the greatest musical that
Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote, it did epitomize the qualities that pervade all of their
work: excellent taste and unashamed sentiment. They had always emphasized
characters who had the courage to face life: Julie, who overcame mistreatment by Billy
in Carousel; Curly, who had the courage to defy the bully Jud Fry in Oklahoma!; Nellie
Forbush of South Pack, who learned the meaning of courage when she realized that
Emile might be stilled on a secret mission; Anna Leonowens of The King and 1, who
stood up for her rights against the half -barbaric monarch; and the Trapps, who had the
courage to attempt an escape from the Nazis over the Alps.
It is with these characters in mind that I reflect on the young people who have
participated in Lodi Theatre for Youth's Summer Musical Theatre Experience this
summer. They have all displayed that same level of courage as each of them has
undertaken the task of mounting a complex and difficult musical production for an
audience. It takes unusual courage to step on a stage in front of a large group of
people and to sing and perform a role. I congratulate each of these young people for
that courage. I have seen them grow over the six weeks they have spent in this program
and 1 know that what they have learned will benefit them throughout their fives. They
all truly did "Climb Ev'ry Mountain." To each of them I give my sincere thanks for a job
well done.
— Rex Reynolds, Director
