AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of Certificate of Appreciation to Dino Barengo
for his Significant Contributions to the Winemaking Industry
in the Greater Lodi Area
MEETING DATE: September 19, 2001
PREPARED BY: Janet L. Hamilton, Management Analyst
RECOMMENDATION: That Mayor Nakanishi present a Certificate of Appreciation
to Dino Barengo for his significant contributions to the
winemaking industry in the greater Lodi area.
BACKGROUND: The Mayor will present a Certificate of Appreciation to
winemaker and businessman, Dino Barengo, for his
significant contributions to the winemaking industry in the
greater Lodi area.
He began his career as a cellar man in 1936, building a reputation as a fine winemaker, gourmet
cook, patron of the arts, and astute businessman. As a winemaker, he developed premier wines
and vinegar. Mr. Barengo pioneered the concept of the tasting room, an idea that flourishes today.
Born Bernardino P. Barengo in San Francisco in 1912 to Italian immigrant parents, Mr. Barengo
moved with his family to Reno and attended schools there, eventually earning a degree in
chemistry from the University of Nevada in Reno. In 1936, he went to work for the Shewan-Jones
Winery in Lodi and moved to Bradford Winery between 1938 and 1940. He began his career as
winemaker for Acampo Winery in August of 1940 and bought the company three years later. In
1963, he opened the first of three tasting rooms in the area. The winery flourished as it made
custom wines for Mondavi, Korbel, and Weibel. The cellars were known for their May wine, as well
as a fine salad wine vinegar.
FUNDING: None.
