BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Mayor has been requested to present a proclamation proclaiming the week of October 1 - 5, 2001 as "California Rideshare Week 2001". California Rideshare Week is a statewide event recognizing the importance of ridesharing as a means of transportation in California. It has the potential to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion as well as fuel consumption, transportation costs and parking needs. In addition, one of the Lodi's Downtown Trip Reduction Program goals is to encourage ridesharing or use of alternative modes while traveling to and from work in downtown Lodi. The City of Lodi recognizes the importance of ridesharing as an effective, low-cost solution to many transportation and environmental issues. The ridesharing programs developed and implemented throughout California, and specifically in San Joaquin County, have helped enhance the quality and effectiveness of the County's and State's transportation systems. Cities, counties, and states throughout our nation have all recognized ridesharing as an effective component in a comprehensive transportation system. On October 3, 2001, at 12:30 p.m., the City of Lodi, along with San Joaquin Council of Governments (COG) will be promoting California Rideshare Week 2001 by hosting an ice cream social at the Lodi Station.
