HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - June 20, 2001 E-11AGENDA TITLE: Adopt a Resolution Authorizing the City Manager to Sign a Contract with the State
of California for the Purchase of Six Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Dial -a -Ride Buses
MEETING DATE: June 20, 2001
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to sign a contract with the
State of California to purchase six Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses
for Dial -a -Ride and issue a Purchase Order to EI Dorado Bus Sales for six
Type III Paratransit Buses.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The City of Lodi's Dial -a -Ride bus fleet is aging. The City currently
owns two eight-year-old diesel, seven seven-year-old CNG, and five
five-year-old gasoline Dial -a -Ride buses. The two diesel buses will
be retired and the five gasoline buses will go into a contingency
fleet. Although this increases the City's fleet by five vehicles, a contingency fleet is needed to avoid
leasing buses during unexpected service increases or emergencies. It also provides vehicles when
othe6are out of service for mechanical problems or accident repairs.
The six new Dial -a -Ride buses will be off the State of California's contract. Purchasing from the State
contract saves money and valuable staff time. The estimated cost for each bus is $75,000. These CNG
buses will be heavy duty. The smaller Dial -a -Ride buses have shown not to hold up well for the day-to-
day service. They have a 176 -inch wheelbase and are 24 feet long. The expected life of these buses
will be five years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, the City of Lodi has always
exceeded the expected life of the paratransit buses because of the excellent maintenance they receive.
Each new CNG bus will be driven about 120 miles per day and will be ADA -accessible. As was the
case with the six fixed -route buses, no funding will come from Federal Transit Administration formula
funds, TDA funds or the City's General Fund.
FUNDING: $354,000 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds
$ 96,000 San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (Heavy -Duty Program)
