HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - October 18, 1995 (56)OF 4 CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TiTLE: Management Team Workshop MEETING DATE: October 18, 1995 SUBMITTED BY: City Manager RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council Approve Funding for the Teambuilding Management Workshop. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Over the last two months the City has been interviewing consultants with expertise in the conduct of team building workshops. Five consulting firms were interviewed by a subcommittee composed of the City Manager, Personnel Director, and Public Works Director. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this workshop are enumerated below: 1) Identify/clarify roles of individual members of the new management team . 2) Uncover concerns and conflicts between/among members. 3) Express expectations: between department heads; between department heads and City Manager. 4) Learn about techniques of effective teamwork; working relationships and "building a contract"; 5) Apply rules of conflict resolution for future disagreements; 6) Focus on opportunities for innovation and improvement, and inherent barriers; 7) Working toward a management philosophy; 8) Working toward a management team purpose. LOCATION: In order to accomplish these objectives, it is recommended that the retreat take place away from the work site. The retreat will take place over a three day period of time (Sunday through Tuesday). The retreat calls for an investment and commitment of individual time from managers (Sunday night and Monday evening) to be successful. Several sites were evaluated for the retreat. The criteria for the location was cost, location, facility with meeting rooms. At the direction of the City Manager, sites in non -ostentatious locations were evaluated to keep costs low and to concentrate on the purpose of the retreat. APPROVED: D I WO, �4M� THOMAS A. PETERSON recycled paper City Manager cc -1 Sites were evaluated in locations including a Jesuit Retreat House and other conference facilities in Yuba City, Napa, Concord, and Modesto. The site selected for the retreat was Asilomar Conference Center, located in Pacific Grove. In addition to a pleasant location, Asilomar is a unit of the California State Park System and is a non-profit organization. For these reasons, Asilomar's rates were the lowest quote that we received. The cost per person, including meals is $75.00 per day. This cost includes the use of meeting rooms.
