HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - September 6, 1995 (67) OF CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Renaming of Westgate Park MEETING DATE: September 6, 1995 PREPARED BY: City Manager RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council rename Westgate Park as "Peterson Park" by motion action. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Members of the City Council have recommended that the City rename Westgate Park "Peterson Park" in recognition of the leadership and contributions made by former City Manager Thomas A. Peterson during his 22 years of public service to the citizens of Lodi. Some of Mr. Peterson's contributions to the City of Lodi are as follows: 1. his participation in the establishment of the Northern California Power Association (NCPA) to ensure continued and reliable power to the residents of Lodi; 2. the development of a Central City Revitalization plan to revitalize the downtown, attract new industry to Lodi, improve Cherokee Lane and upgrade the Eastside neighborhoods; 3. the development and construction of the City's Community Center at Hutchins Street Square; 4. the effective representation of the City with other City, County and State agencies and associations; 5. the promotion of new community events and activities such as "Lodi Day at the 'Stick", the "Lodi Downtown Street Fair", the "OOOH, AHHH Festival" and the annual Labor Day event "Field and Fair Day"; 6. the remodel of City facilities including the old library into Carnegie Forum, the Municipal Service Center, and currently, the remodel of City Hall; and 7. the demonstration of his love and devotion to the City of Lodi in selecting Lodi as his permanent home after retirement. Renaming a City park for a public official is not an unprecedented action. Twin Oaks Park was renamed for Mr. Hank Glaves on his retirement from the City in 1985. In addition, other City Council's have approved the naming of DeBenedetti Park, Reid Substation, Hughes Substation, Lawrence Park, Hale Park, Blakely Park, Pixley Park, Chuck Parson Point at Lodi Lake, and perhaps other areas.
