MEETING DATE: May 3, 1995 PREPARED BY: Parks and Recreation Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: Reconsideration and determination regarding a change in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan for Westgate Park. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Area residents are concerned that Westgate Park is planned to provide programmed use that would not be consistent with a neighborhood park. The area of particular concern is the 90' hard ball diamond. We have made numerous changes to accommodate resident's concerns regarding this park. One change we have already made is to remove the parking lot. The size of this park indicates that potential use could accommodate numerous users. To reduce the park use, the residents are concerned about practice by youth sports teams. While in the past they have agreed that the park could be used for practice, it now appears that the 90' ball field is objectionable. Staff recommendation - Attached is a proposed layout of Westgate Park. The plan shows two fields, 1 softball and 1 hardball field. If Council wishes to continue to provide the level of service called for in the Master Plan, it will be necessary to retain the two fields as practice fields. Therefore, it is staff's recommendation to follow the Master Plan as previously approved.
