Since that time, Dell has become the leader in industry -standard network server sales in the United States, providing public and private enterprises with high-quality, reasonably -priced equipment. Because of the City's previous experience with Dell (PCs purchased under CMAS and US Communities purchasing agreements over the past three years), staff believes the City can save money on the purchase of Dell servers without lowering operational standards. Staff therefore recommends adding Dell as an authorized manufacturer of network servers for the City while maintaining other provisions of Res. 98-72. Staff also recommends the approval of the purchase of a Dell PowerEdge 2500 server for the Public Works Department's Fleet Services' Fleet Anywhere maintenance management system. The Fleet Services' vehicle and equipment management system originally operated on a shared server with the Streets, Water, and Wastewater Divisions. That server was replaced to meet the needs of the other divisions, but the Fleet's system continued to operate on the original, 10+ year-old Novell server. This unit is not Year 2000 compliant, and needs to be replaced immediately. The Fleet Software is upgrading to a newer Windows-based version, and needs a new, stand-alone server to support it. IS staff recommends that an independent server be purchased to meet the current and future needs.
