AGENDA TITLE: United 4 Youth
MEETING DATE: June 6, 2001
SUBMITTED BY: Cynthia Haynes, Community Promotions Coordinator
RECOMMENDED ACTION: No action required.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Four Communities are spearheading a new youth Initiative,
United 4 Youth. The plan is to convene a community of
support around focused efforts to help youth be more
successful in their lives. Seed money to start the collaborative
effort comes from United Way Community Impact Funds.
Lodi, Manteca, Stockton and Tracy each have Community Councils (Cynthia Haynes is currently
Chairman of the Lodi Area Community Council) which form a nucleus of volunteer leadership in
their respective cities to begin this new movement. The United Way Board voted in February to
give the Councils two-year funding that would bring community sectors together forming a
collaborative to achieve some specific measurable outcome in two broad areas.
Programs will be focusing on constructive uses of time for teens, with the outcomes being seen in
increased social competencies, such as planning and decision making, conflict resolution,
resistance skills and interpersonal competence.
At this time, we envision the collaborative partners including City Government, School Districts,
and Faith Community, Not for Profits, and all other organizations public and private. Requests for
proposals will be issued this summer in each of the four communities. The City of Lodi will be
granted $65,000.00 for the United 4 Youth initiative the first year.
Funding: Not Applicable
