RECOMMENDED ACTION: Marjorie Paulsen, President of the Library Board of Trustees, will
present the Bob Hildreth Library Volunteer of the Year Award to
Roberta Presley.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: At its March 19, 2001 meeting the Library Board of Trustees
established the Bob Hildreth Library Volunteer of the Year Award to
be awarded during National Library Week to honor the library
volunteer who contributed significantly to the support of library
services for the Lodi Public Library and the residents of Lodi. Bob Hildreth served as President of the
Friends of Lodi Library for three years from 1997 through November 2000. As President of the Friends he
also served on the Lodi Public Library Foundation Board of Directors. He volunteered as a tutor in the
Friends of Lodi Library Adult Literacy Program, as a Catalog Pathfinder in the program assisting library
patrons in the use of the Online Catalog, and as a Internet Gater in a program designed to help library
patrons use the public access computers.
Selected by the Library Board of Trustees, the first recipient of this award is Roberta Presley. Roberta
Presley coordinated the highly successful Friends of Lodi Library Adult Literacy Program from 1994-2000.
During her tenure the program increased the number of tutor/student pairs from 20 to over 80. Roberta
introduced an ESL component to the program in 1998 and in 1999 Roberta purchased study materials to
assist students with obtaining US citizenship. Under her coordination the program has provided literacy
services for over 500 Lodi residents.
