AGENDA TITLE: Adopt resolution awarding the bid for the purchase of 20,000 feet of
#2 15kV underground conductor ($16,381.50) (EUD)
MEETING DATE: February 21, 2001
PREPARED BY: Electric Utility Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt a resolution awarding the bid for the
purchase of 20,000 feet of size #2 15kV concentric neutral primary
underground cable to the low bidder, Nexans, through their Northern
California distributor, Isberg Nott Company of San Ramon, in the
amount of $16,381.50.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On January 10, 2001, the City Manager approved specifications and
authorized advertisement for bids for this conductor.
On February 7 the following bids were opened:
Ootion 1 (Firm Price) Option 2 War. Price
Nexans, c/o Isberg Nott Co., San Ramon
$16,381.50
No Bid
Pirelli Cables & Systems, Colusa, CA
$17,931.00
$17,393.50
Western States Electric, Portland, OR
$18,189.00
$18,060.00
Hendrix Wire & Cable, W. Milford, NH
$19,479.00
$19,242.50
Rome Cable Corporation, Rome, N.Y.
$29,326.00
$28,982.00
Bidders were asked to provide a firm price and/or a variable price (which could increase or decrease,
depending on the prices of copper and aluminum at the time of shipment).
Staff recommends award to Nexans at their firm price of $16,381.50, since base prices of copper and
aluminum would have to drop by over 30% in the next 8 weeks for Pirelli's variable price to be a better buy for
the City. The likelihood of such a drop is remote.
A portion of this conductor will be used to provide new service to the Century Meadows #3 Unit 5 subdivision,
and a portion will be used at the Mondavi Winery warehouse on Guild Avenue. The balance will be placed
into inventory to cover future requirements.
