HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - January 17, 2001 E-17CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Approve Donation of Police Cars to San Joaquin Delta College Police Academy DATE: January 17, 2001 PREPARED BY: JERRY J. ADAMS, CHIEF OF POLICE RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council approve the donation of two retired police cars to the San Joaquin Delta College Basic Peace Officer Academy for training purposes. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:The San Joaquin Delta College Basic Peace Officer Academy provides basic peace officer training for students aspiring to become police officers. Many of the graduates are eventually employed by various law enforcement agencies throughout San Joaquin County. Within the Lodi Police Department well over half of the sworn staff is comprised of graduates from the Delta College Peace Officer Academy. The San Joaquin Delta College Academy provides excellent basic training which has contributed to the overall effectiveness of this department. While the Academy does have an operating budget for personnel costs, very little is available for training needs and/or equipment and often times the Academy is forced to rely on donations. By donating two retired police cars to the Academy this would enable staff members to provide realistic training to students in the area of traffic stops and other training related to police vehicles. Many future graduates are likely to become members of the Lodi Police Department. FUNDING: Minimal, as these vehicles are scheduled to be retired and most of the equipment can be transferred to the new vehicles. We are requesting the light bars and sirens be included in this donation. Two new light bars and sirens can be absorbed in the police department operating budget. Jerry/J.
