BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The electric utility proposes a two-year pilot shade tree program with Tree Lodi, a California non-profit corporation (Tree Lodi), the City's long-standing urban forest partner dedicated to bringing the benefits of trees to Lodi. While Tree Lodi has been selecting and planting trees, educating Lodi citizens about planting the right tree in the right place, and maximizing the life and benefit of trees for many years, this pilot program will help us improve the tree canopy in Lodi through tree plantings and education on the value and care of trees on a different scale. In addition to assisting the electric utility curb, decrease and eventually eliminate planting trees in locations which interfere with power lines, Tree Lodi will help hundreds of families add trees to their landscape, cool homes and neighborhoods, clean air and water, and improve the quality of life in the Lodi community. Tree Lodi plans to implement this scope of work by conducting on-site consultations by volunteer arborists, purchasing trees from local nurseries, delivering trees and supplies, and educating homeowners on planting. Tree Lodi also plans to continue community workshops. A website is currently in the planning stages and is anticipated to be up and running by mid-June. The website will provide a comprehensive program description and invite homeowners to apply for trees. Tree Lodi will provide monthly reports along with invoices to the City. After one year, the City will be able to estimate carbon offsets generated by surviving trees planted by Tree Lodi. The pilot program's scope of work and estimated year -one budget is attached. The funds are budgeted and available in the public benefits budget. Tree Lodi and City staff will work closely together in year -one to address any issues which may arise throughout the year in order to continue the program in year -two. The budget presented herein is for year -one. Staff will obtain Council approval for funding prior to year two of the program.
