BACKGROUND INFORMATION: At the City Council meeting of October 4, 2000, the City Council awarded a contract to Steiny and Company, Inc. for installation of streetlights in an amount of $92,447.80. Subsequent to this award the Department has learned about a hazardous condition relating to streetlights in the area of Church and Chestnut Streets adjacent to Needham School. The specific condition in this area is caused by tree roots pushing the conduit system out of the ground in turn causing a tripping hazard. To correct this condition in the most expedient manner it is recommended that a new conduit system including streetlight bases be installed. The contractor for the above mentioned streetlight project has agreed to install the needed bases and conduit system under the same terms and conditions of the contract for an amount of $4,915. This addendum will then expand the scope of the contract to require a ten-day extension to the number of workdays allowed for the project. The total contract amount is $97,362.80. A change order would not be the appropriate option since the additional work is in a different location and does change the scope of the project as specified in the contract plans and specifications approved by the City Council.
