AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of the Community Improvement Award
MEETING DATE: November 1, 2000
PREPARED BY: Community Development Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the Mayor present to Charles & Hazel Johnson, property owners of
341 E. Locust Street, and to Lodi House, a shelter for women and children
at 801 S. Washington, Community Improvement Awards to recognize
their individual contributions to the improvement of Lodi.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are the owner -occupants of the residential
property located at 341 E. Locust Street. Located on a residential
block that has been identified as one of the most blighted in the
area, the Johnson's have steadfastly maintained their property to
the highest standard, which has been in contrast to adjacent multi -family apartment properties that could
be considered marginal at best. For their commitment to maintaining such a high standard on their
property, the Eastside Improvement Committee felt that the Johnson's were most deserving of
recognition with the Community Improvement Award.
The second award recognizes not just an improvement at an Eastside property, but also for a very
valued service that is provided to residents in this community. Lodi House, a local non-profit
organization has taken a residential property on Lodi's lower Eastside and have made improvements
which make the property more attractive, but most importantly have filled a void by providing a shelter
for homeless women and children from this community. In appreciation for the improvement to the
property and for the invaluable service that is being provided to this community, the City Manager's
Office felt that Lodi House was most deserving of the Community Improvement Award.
