BACKGROUND INFORMATION: In 1997, the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District awarded the City $30,000 for the purchase of five CNG patrol cars. The money was designated for the incremental cost of the CNG patrol cars. CNG patrol cars are $6,000 more than gasoline patrol cars. However, none are available; for that reason the Public Works Department looked for different, high -mileage applications. The challenge with alternatively -fueled vehicle acquisitions is the limited number of dealers and choice of vehicles. For this acquisition, the Public Works Department recommends acquiring two CNG Honda Civics (to replace the Fleet and Facilities Manager's car 04-047 and the Engineering Pool Car 04-090), one CNG Ford E350 Cargo Van (to replace the Survey Van 04-013), and one CNG Dodge Van (to replace the Evidence Van 05-058) off California's Contract List. Also, Public Works recommends acquiring a CNG Toyota Camry, sole source, from Maita's Toyota of Sacramento. The CNG Camry is the only CNG mid- size sedan available. The CNG Camry would replace 04-109, the City Hall Motor Pool Car. The existing motor pool car is a gasoline Ford Crown Victoria. Based on roominess, Pubic Works thinks the Camry would be a better choice than a Civic. No local dealerships are authorized to sell these CNG vehicles. The Fleet Committee has reviewed and approved this purchase. FUNDING: Equipment Replacement Fund (1998/99 and 2000/01) $90,350 Air District $20,200 (Incremental cost for five vehicles is less than the grant amount.)
