BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Lodi Lions Club has long supported capital improvements at Emerson Park, one of Lodi's most popular parks for children. Those projects include the picnic shelter, barbecue and pavers. One year ago, the Lions Club announced it would begin raising money to construct a new "tot" playground, aimed at 2- to 5 -year-olds, to replace the one removed in early 2017 due to unsafe conditions. The club held several fund-raisers, including a crab feed, to pay for the new equipment, which includes a cast concrete lion. The club ordered the equipment at the end of June, and began work in October with the assistance of Parks staff. The work included removing the existing wood fiber fill, cutting through the seating wall to provide wheelchair access, and digging footings for the playground equipment. Additional help was provided by the Electric Utility, which used a crane to lift the 5,400 -pound concrete lion from the back of a flatbed truck to its final location. Volunteers completed the project on November 17, and the final safety inspection was performed on November 20. Richard Prima, the City's former Public Works Director, spearheaded the project and will accept the certificate on behalf of the Lodi Lions Club. The City of Lodi and its residents are fortunate to have partners such as the Lodi Lions Club, whose volunteer spirit and dedication to the community and its children are an example to all.
