BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Lodi Fire Department as part of our commitment to further serve the citizens of Lodi has formed a special team of six line suppression personnel to assist the Fire Prevention Bureau with the investigation of suspicious fires. The City of Lodi Fire and Police Departments have signed on as part of the San Joaquin County Joint Arson Task Force. Lodi Fire Department and Lodi Police Department have begun a cooperative effort to aggressively pursue and prosecute arson crimes. Lodi Police Department has made the commitment of sending detectives along with fire personnel to State Fire Marshals courses in Arson Investigation. The plan is to rotate old city vehicles planned for disposal with a low value for the minimal use, which would be encountered by the Fire Investigation Unit. Rotating vehicles on a regular basis is necessary for undercover vehicles to avoid detection. The 1986 Pontiac Sunbird (43-052) was replaced by a newer vehicle to Community Development. It has 55,543 miles and was determined to be the best vehicle for condition and maintenance costs by the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor. Maintenance costs over the lifetime of the vehicle has been $6,433. FUNDING: The city owns the vehicle, which is currently to be disposed and has minimal resale value. The plan is to replace the vehicle with older surplus city vehicles. Used city surplus emergency lamps and siren will be installed, as will surplus radio equipment. The minimal costs involved, considering the value of the asset, can be funded through the fleet maintenance budget.
