AGENDA TITLE: Presentation of Proclamation Proclaiming April 22, 2018 as "Earth Day" in Lodi and
an Invitation to Earth Day Coastal Clean-up on April 14, 2018, in Conjunction with
"Love Lodi"
MEETING DATE: April 4, 2018
PREPARED BY: Public Works Director
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Presentation of proclamation proclaiming April 22, 2018 as "Earth
Day" in Lodi and an invitation to Earth Day coastal clean-up on April
14, 2018, in conjunction with "Love Lodi."
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The first national "Earth Day" was proclaimed in 1970 in order to
promote environmental awareness and foster the need to protect
the environment, conserve resources, and led to the creation of
the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Now in its 48th year, "Earth Day" has expanded to
over 190 countries.
As the years are counted down to the 50th Anniversary of "Earth Day" in 2020, each year will have a
theme emphasizing one of five goals. The theme for this year is "End Plastic Pollution." The City
recognizes the importance of education and outreach to the public to not only promote environmental
awareness but to develop critical thinking skills in students.
This year marks the sixth consecutive year the Earth Day event will be held in the City of Lodi. Together,
in conjunction with "Love Lodi," a coastal clean-up event at Lodi Lake will be held on April 14, 2018 in
celebration of Earth Day. The Public Works Department would like to invite Lodi citizens to join in this
effort.
