BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Staff invites the Mayor, City Council, the City Manager and the Parks and Recreation Commission to this year's Arbor Day celebration, spearheaded by Tree Lodi. This year's event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, at Hale Park. This year's celebration is part of a larger project coordinated by a number of public agencies and nonprofits to increase the urban forest of east Lodi. As the recipient of a grant called CIRCLE 2.0 (California Initiative to Reduce Carbon and Limit Emissions) the City is scheduled to plant 165 trees in the Heritage District following a tree -planting demonstration at Hale Park. The Heritage District has been divided into five sections, with each assigned a team to canvass neighborhoods to find residents willing to plant and maintain the trees. Trees planted as part of this grant provide many benefits, including reducing heat island effect, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy, cleaning water and air, providing aesthetic and habitat value, and improving public health. CIRCLE 2.0 grant partners include CalFire, the California Urban Forests Council, West Coast Arborists, and the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. On March 6, the City was notified by the Arbor Day Foundation that it was designated as Tree City USA for 2017, its 15th consecutive year receiving this recognition. Tree Lodi prepared and assisted the City in submitting the application. This designation affords us preference over other communities for grant money for trees or forestry programs and gives us an enhanced public image as a city that cares for its trees. The celebration of Arbor Day gives an opportunity to learn about trees and take positive action to make our schools, our city and the place we work in a better place. FISCAL IMPACT: Not applicable.
