The Informal Informational Meeting ("Shirtsleeve" Session) of the Lodi City Council of Tuesday,
November 7, 2017, was cancelled due to lack of a quorum. An informal presentation was made
on the topic - Library Annual Report - with background materials and PowerPoint presentation on
file in the City Clerk's Office.

RECOMilIENDED ACTION: Receive Library 2017 Annual Report.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: On an annual basis the Library presents its accomplishments for the
current year along with prospective goals for the upcoming year. At
this Council Shirtsleeve session, the Library will present its list of
accomplishments for the 2017 calendar year along with the
anticipated goals for the 2018 calendar year. Additionally, the
Library will discuss with Council the challenges that confront libraries (in general, and specifically with the
City of Lodi) along with its strategies to overcome these challenges.

Library Statistics
•119,487 US libraries, including 100,000 school libraries
•For every 2 books sold 1 book is borrowed from a library
•1.5 billion visits to a US library (in last survey)
•Almost 60% of public has a Library card
•Average American checks out more than 8 books a year
•Most visited group of library uses:
–53% of Millennials (age of 18-35)
–45% of GenXers (age of 25-34)
–43% of Baby Boomers (age of 52-70)
–36% of Silent Generation (over 70)
–46% of adults over 18 visited a library the past 12 months
•Largest library in world? Most stolen book in the Library?
What Libraries Offer
•73% of libraries help with job applications/interview
•68% help patrons find career openings
•48% help entrepreneurs with online business resources
•59% provide programs for patrons to find health insurance
•95% provide online homework help assistance
•95% offer summer reading programs for children
•100% offer access to the internet
•90% help patrons with basic internet skills
•97% help patrons complete online government forms
•E-books, early/adult literacy, homework help program, Internet service,
children’s story time, language classes, job placement and career
resources, computer classes, cultural events, government service
assistance, public meeting spaces, new business development
2017 Accomplishments
•231,000 annual visitors (2nd most since 2010)
•15,720 event attendees (most since 2007)
•Over 60,000 registered library users (most since 2007)
•Complete(d) construction of Teen Scene
•Complete(d) replacement of roof
•Raised approximately $50,000 at annual Storyteller Dinner (most ever)
•Patrons have access to millions of free materials through Links+
•Renovated lobby with mural by Crane Festival; mosaic outside lobby
•Installed 9 new video cameras to increase patron security
•Homework Help served 5,500; computer center served 2,700 patrons
•Reviewed 50% of collection to ensure it’s up to date, relevant/attentive to
patron/community needs
•200+ volunteers donated 30,124 hours totaling $709,000 in unpaid work
2018 Goals
•Resurface parking and reconfigure drainage
•Begin work on new toddler/youth Storyteller Room
•Create video promoting fully renovated library
•Complete installation of studio/media room
•Complete multi-year strategic plan for Library, Foundation and
Friends
•Promote Teen Scene throughout community
•Select/install new circulation desk
•Review remaining 50% of collection to ensure it’s up to date,
relevant/attentive to patron/community needs
•Install outdoor art for corner of Church and Locust
Role of the libraries has changed
•Mission remains the same:
•create a more knowledgeable person that makes the right decision
at the right time and for the right reason
•libraries create and disseminate knowledge that creates a better
person, and a better community
•The way we do it has changed dramatically - through
books/videos, games, trainings/programs, libraries
–Passive to active
•Do something, help somebody, create anything,
–contribute their talents/gifts to the betterment of others,
–build a more decent and honorable community with charity,
compassion and goodness in its people.

•50% of business gone after 5 years; 70% in 10 years; must be data driven,
as the product remains/delivery changes
•watches, calculators, alarm clocks, trains, travel agents, floppy disks,
radio stations, Blackberry, postal workers, cameras, newspapers, TV
Guide, pagers, home phones, Mariah Carey, bank tellers, Facebook,
email, road maps, dictionary, Yellow Pages, music, print photos, write
letters, desktop computers, playing cards, DVDs, books
•Success favors those that adapt to a different future;
•Show we can make a difference in their life
2.Do something: active vs passive; move vs sit
•Homework help, adult literacy, interview assistance, crafts, laser tag,
STEAM, SAT practice tests, puppet making, cupcake decorating, family
game night, plays, computer classes, murder mystery, dance recitals,
career guidance, citizenship preparation,
3.Technology, volunteers and donors
–50% less full-time staff than 2011 (14 to 7)
–Almost 40% less part-time staff than 2013
–Almost 80% of all checkouts are done using a machine
(versus 25% in 2014)
–200+ volunteers donated 30,124 hours totaling $709,000 in
unpaid work
4.Take a chance
–Homework Help, Computer Learning Center, Adult Literacy
Rooms, Teen Scene…..
–Results matter – dreams may be great, but they are worthless
unless you achieve them
