RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Presentation of proclamation proclaiming September 16, 2017 as
"California Coastal Cleanup Day" and September 18-24, 2017 as
"National Pollution Prevention Week" in Lodi.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Every year, on the third Saturday in September, people join together
at sites all over California to take part in the State's largest volunteer
event, California Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2016, nearly 60,000
volunteers removed more than 700,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California's beaches, lakes,
and waterways. Volunteers come together to celebrate and share their appreciation of California's
fabulous beaches, lakes, and waterways. The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup,
organized by the Ocean Conservancy, which is the largest volunteer event on the planet.
Vast amounts of plastic debris litter the world's oceans, and most of this debris comes from land. Our
beaches are collecting spots for trash from city streets and highways. Trash can travel via inland
waterways, storm drains, sewers, or wind and then eventually ends up on the coast. If not removed, this
debris will end up in the ocean. Beach cleanups are the last line of defense to prevent debris from
causing harm to our oceans, wildlife, our coastal economies, and even beach -goers.
This year will be Lodi's 15th year participating in this annual event. In 2016, over 300 volunteers
removed nearly 200 pounds of trash and recyclables from Lodi Lake and nearby waterways; including
approximately 3,000 cigarette butts and over 2,000 food wrappers. This year, as in years past, Lodi Lake
Coastal Cleanup participants are encouraged to ride their bicycles to the cleanup event.
This year is the 27th anniversary of the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 and National Pollution Prevention
Week is an opportunity for City of Lodi to bring awareness to ways in which we can all, on a daily basis,
prevent pollution and celebrate the volunteers and residents throughout the City of Lodi who actively
participate in pollution prevention activities.
A representative of the Public Works Department will be present to accept the proclamation.
