HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - January 5, 2000 E-09OF CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Accept Donated Military Surplus Pickup Truck for Bomb Squad MEETING DATE: January 5, 2000 PREPARED BY: Police Chief RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council accept a donated US Military Surplus Pickup Truck to be equipped as a Bomb Squad response vehicle, replacing their existing SUV. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Lodi Police Department Bomb Squad responds approximately 35 times per year to various suspicious device calls, both locally and as part of the San Joaquin Metropolitan Bomb Squad. About a year ago, they requested a vehicle and were assigned a Jeep Cherokee SUV that was being retired from first line duty as a detective vehicle. While this vehicle has helped greatly, the bomb squad has found that it does not meet all of its mission requirements. Specifically, it does not accommodate all of the equipment that the squad carries, and does not provide for an evidence processing and storage area. Recently, Police Department staff obtained a 1989 Chevrolet 1 -ton 4X4 pickup truck from the DRMO Military Surplus to Law Enforcement Program. The vehicle, which has been held for reserve use, has 26,000 actual miles and is in good condition except for some appearance items (i.e., cracked dashboard). A used truck body with lockable exterior boxes and a small interior personnel compartment is also available from city surplus. It is the intention of staff, if acceptance of the truck is approved by council, to use these components to build a vehicle for the bomb squad that will satisfy their mission requirements for some time to come. FUNDING: Since the city owns the truck body and since the truck is donated, the only costs include paint and refurbishing. Used city surplus emergency lamps and siren will be installed, as will surplus radio equipment. The minimal costs involved, considering the value of the asset, can be funded through the fleet maintenance budget.
