HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Report - November 3, 1999 E-06CITY OF LODI COUNCIL COMMUNICATION AGENDA TITLE: Authorize Purchase of Sidewalk Sweeper for Street Division ($27,800) MEETING DATE: November 3, 1999 PREPARED BY: Public Works Director RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the City Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing the purchase of a Green Machine Model 414RS Sidewalk Sweeper for the Street Division of the Public Works Department from Western Traction Company of Union City, in the amount of $27,799.50. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: A full-time Street Cleanup Worker has been assigned to maintain the Downtown area. With the expansion of development improvements and increasing emphasis on the Downtown area, staff has been researching the purchase of a small sidewalk sweeper. This sweeper would greatly assist in maintaining the overall appearance of alleys, tree wells, and the unique designs of our streets requiring extensive cleaning and attention. During the last year, several different units have been demonstrated to our staff. Staff recommends the Green Machine because of its long-standing reputation in the industry and its quietness. This machine has small sweeper brooms in front and vacuums both from the underside and via a detachable wander hose. This unit easily converts from a seated to a walk -behind operation. This conversion feature is well suited to use on busy sidewalks. Council has been provided with informational packets. Western Traction Company is the sole supplier of this unit. Upon approval, staff will order a purple unit and work with Mr. Lewis Van Buskirk of the Lodi Downtown Business Partnership Association to arrange a Name -the -Sweeper contest. This will be an addition to the City fleet, and there is no trade-in. Delivery of a purple unit will take approximately 10 weeks after receipt of the order. The project estimate includes the cost of in-service preparation. This request is included in the 1999/200 Capital Improvement Budget, Page E-7, and detailed on Page E-31.
